The most popular season for photos...
Fall is my favorite time of year to photograph families. There are fewer bugs, no one is overheating, and the colors and golden hour are unmatched compared to any other time of year. Fall is also every family photographer’s busiest season. With the changing colors and mild temperatures—not to mention people planning for holiday cards—autumn is the perfect time for fall family photo ideas. Fall photo sessions in the Metrowest towns of Sudbury, Concord, Acton, Hudson, Stow, Wayland, Weston and more offer so many options for beautiful backdrops. We are so lucky that we live in this area so let's celebrate it with your photos!
Best Locations for a Fall Family Photo Shoot
Everyone enjoys having their family photos taken in the fall because of the changing colors and New England is the best place for that foliage! This is one of the perks of booking a full family photo session. You get to choose your location—whether it's someplace meaningful to your family or just a place you have always thought was beautiful, you can use that as your backdrop! If you need help choosing your location, I am here to help guide you on a location that fits that vibe you are hoping for. I also always recommend reviewing my portfolio to get location inspiration from prior clients.
A few of my personal favorite fall spots for family photos are North Bridge in Concord; Acton Arboretum in Acton, Mt. Misery in Lincoln, Mattison Field in Concord, Camp Sewataro in Sudbury Lake Cochituate in Natick, Cat Rock Park in Weston and Wolbach Farm in Sudbury.
What to Wear for a Fall Family Photo Shoot
Fall is cozy season and your outfits can lean into that. Start with one person in the family and choose their outfit first and coordinate the family’s outfits around it. Try to avoid multiple bold patterns as they will 'fight' with each other in the photos and it's much harder to get a cohesive look you are hoping for. I also recommend avoided red and bold oranges for tops as they cast color onto your faces. Here are a few favorite fall family photo ideas to inspire you:
Neutral Earth Tones
There’s a reason fall is so beloved, and that’s because all of the stunning autumnal colors. An earth tone color palette that leans neutral will include browns, beige, greens, grays, and darker blues. These colors are perfect for those nature shots because they seamlessly complement the colors of your background.
Jewel Tones
If you want something a little more vibrant, don’t be afraid to seek out some jewel tones in the fall. These will include various deeper greens, blues, and purples.
Black, White & Gray
Black, white, and gray can go with anything. The same is true for this type of photoshoot. If you feel most comfortable in these chic tones, stick to what you know to feel your best.
Fall Textures
Don’t forget about plaid and sweaters with textured patterns! Perhaps the best part about the weather cooling down is getting to break out the beloved flannels and cozy tops. Playing with texture such as this can add a fun element to your photo and gives it a real autumnal vibe.
Don't forget your most important accessory- your family's love, genuine laughs and smiles. Family photos should be FUN and capture you and your favorite people as you are at this moment in time. The most beautiful outfits in the world can't outshine the faces of your children. Relax, enjoy it and lets make some memories!
